Clara Hanks

February 8, 1914 — March 31, 2010

Clara Hanks was born on February 8, 1914, the tenth child born to Philip and Julia Deter at the ranch north of Deer Trail, Colorado. Clara attended the prairie, one room, county school for two years then transferred in the 3rd grade to the Deer Trail School. She graduated from Deer Trail High School in 1932, the only Deter child to finish high school. Clara married Harold Hanks in September of 1932. They lived through the depression and the dust bowl days. They bought the liquor store in 1938 and lived behind it. In 1947 they bought the house on 3rd street where they lived their lives out. Clara was an active member in the Deer Trail community. She was a member of the Jockeyettes, the Elkettes, Deer Trail Pioneers Historical Society and the Home Demonstration Club. Clara and Harold were honored on September 1986 when they were chosen by the Jockeyettes as Parade Marshals for the Deer Trail Rodeo Parade and Rodeo. She was also honored by the Old Timers for being at the first banquet held. Clara’s hobbies were crafts of all types. She researched genealogy for her family and Harold’s. She was a great cook and her family honored her with her cookbook and large family cookbook party. She loved playing cards and one time was in a Bridge Club. Her main love was her family and she enjoyed every get together and started the family reunion’s which still takes place. Her family will greatly miss her. Clara is survived by five children; John (Margaret) Hanks, Naomi (Robert) Charovano, Nancy (Jack) Morris, Julie(George) Robinson and Margie( Bruce) Nordstrom. She is survived by eleven grandchildren; Robin Charovano, Cory Elam, Mitzi Swiatkowski, Julie Ann Neil, Reed Hanks, Chad Morris, Blain Morris, Shane Robinson, Dusty Robinson, Jennifer Webb, Brook Ramsey and twenty great great grandchildren.
