Clarence Jenkins

Clarence G. Jenkins, age 92, of St. Francis, Kansas. Died August 23, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Village in St. Francis. He was born June 19, 1917 in Campo, Colorado to Pleasant and Mary Jenkins, the youngest of nine siblings. He spent the early part of his life in southeastern Colorado where he worked in ranching and farming. At age 16, he hired on and helped in an open range drive from Elkhart, Kansas to Raton, New Mexico. He served his country in the Army during World War II. After the war, he moved to Bethune, Colorado where he took up farming and raising a family. In 1951 he married Doris Glasscock from De Ridder, Louisiana. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and horseman. He and Doris built a wagon and joined the Bi-Centennial Wagon Train in 1976. After retiring from farming, he and Doris traveled extensively visiting family and friends. With the failing health of Doris, they moved to Loveland in 1998 to be closer to family. After the death of his wife in 2005, he moved to the St. Francis area where he resided until his he passed away. He is survived by one sister, Grace Mathews of Springfield, Oregon, a daughter, Barbara Sherrod of Abilene, Texas, sons, Jerry Jenkins of Bethune, Dale Jenkins of Shell Knob, Missouri, and Carl Jenkins of St. Francis, Kansas. He is preceded in death by Doris, his wife, three sisters, four brothers, and one daughter. Funeral services for Clarence were held on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Carl Rogers officiating. Burial followed at the Fairview Cemetery in Burlington. Visitation was held on Friday, August 28, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Love Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Clarence’s name to the Hope Congregational Church and may be left at the Colorado East Bank and Trust in Stratton, Colorado.
