Eileen Stewart

Longtime Burlington, Colorado resident, Eileen G. Stewart passed away on April 30, 2013 at the Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington. She was 96 years old. Eileen was born on August 24, 1916 in Cartright, North Dakota to Lester Washburn and Libby Ellenor (Green) Farwell. She was one of seven children. Eileen moved to Burlington with her parents when she was 13. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1935, and became employed as a telephone operator. Her parents started the first chiropractor’s office in Burlington. Eileen was stopped by a courtesy patrolman, and was issued a ticket, thus meeting her future husband Howard Stewart. On September 11, 1938, Eileen and Howard were married in Burlington, Colorado. To this union, four children, Anita, Don, Ruth and Stan were born. In 1946, Howard and Eileen started the first Municipal Airport in Burlington. In 1953, while continuing to run the airport, they moved to the family farm south of Burlington. After losing her husband in 1959, Eileen moved back to Burlington with her four children and continued to own and operate the airport until 1963. After raising their four children, Eileen was employed by the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital as the first Medical Records Technician. During this time, she graduated from Morgan Community College. Eileen was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and the Rebekah’s. After retiring in 1984, she enjoyed bowling, gardening, tole painting, and especially spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, one brother Lester Farwell, four sisters; Alta Farwell, Lulu Farwell, Florence Taylor and Dorothy Lobaugh. She is also preceded in death by her great grandson Brandon Stewart. She is survived by her four children; Anita Stewart, Don Stewart and his wife Pauline, Stan Stewart and his wife Nancy, all of Burlington, Colorado, and Ruth Elliott and her husband James of Monument, Colorado. She is also survived by one sister Clara Burton of Circleville, Ohio, twelve grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.
