John D. Cranshaw, 93, born to John Cranshaw Sr. and Mary Avant in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021. John enjoyed a rich and full life. At the age 17, he joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served for 22 years. John was proud of serving in the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team. He was also a member of the last Black Buffalo Unit from 1946 – 1949, and until 1953 he served with the Special Category Army Retained with the Air Force “SCARWAF”. He spent time in Tokyo as an MOS Electrician / Engineer and Firefighter, and as a Radio Radar Repairman in Germany from 1964 to 1967. In February, 2016, John, along with his fellow veterans who served during the Korean War, were honored at a ceremony and received recognition from the Republic of Korea as Ambassadors of Peace.
After "retiring" twice more, he developed a love for motorcycle riding. He and his beloved wife and companion, Claudette crossed this country many times "on iron" while enjoying the company of like-minded riders from The Swords of Justice, Long Range Riders, and the Mile High Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle clubs. His last ride was at the young age of 91.
John leaves behind his cherished wife of 43 years, Claudette; his firstborn son, Ira Cranshaw, followed by Lynette White, Debra Lee, Terrance Lee, Charmin Lee and his youngest son, Carl Cranshaw. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his extended family and friends, too many to mention by name.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Bennett Community Center, 1100 W. Colfax Ave, Saturday, July 17, 2021, 1:00 p.m. COVID precautions will be in place. For more information, please visit Love Funeral Home website at strasburg.lovefuneralhomes.com.
