Lawrence Ullo

Lawrence Emery Ullo passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011 in his home in Woodland Park, Colo., with his loving wife - Karla Collins by his side. Larry was born on April 5, 1947 in San Francisco to Lawrence and Dorothy Ullo. After graduating from high school in Milbrae, Calif., Larry joined the United States Air Force in 1967 serving our country for 25 years retiring in 1992 with the rank of Major at the U.S. Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. During his distinguished military career, Larry received a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice from the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif., and his Masters in Psychology Guidance and Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colo. From 1981 until 1986, he was an Assistant Professor and Assistant Course Director of Military Studies at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He went to work for the Colorado Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Parole in 1993 rising to the position of Community Parole Supervisor. During this time, Larry volunteered as Firearms Instructor, First Aid/CPR Instructor and Field Training Officer Development Committee member. He also served on the Community Corrections Board and oversaw the Youth Offender Services program for Colorado Springs. Upon his retirement on July 1 of this year, Larry received a letter of commendation from Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper praising his "outstanding level of professionalism and dedication" and thanking him for "18 years of faithful service to the people of Colorado. "In his spare time, Lali his Hawaiian name used by his loved ones - was a dedicated public servant volunteering countless hours during his five years on the Teller County Planning Commission followed by 9 years as a member of the City of Woodland Park Planning Commission. He chaired the Woodland Park Planning Commission during the contentious Wal-Mart hearings providing a clear head and unbiased approach. He was an avid fitness buff, "Mr. Fix-it" and car and boating aficionado. And when you couldn't find Larry pumping iron in the gym, puttering around the house or polishing his classic Corvette, you could be sure to find him and Karla and their three four-legged children - Timber, Rascal and Barney - floating on Pueblo Reservoir on their boat, the "Seminole Wind." Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Anita Ullo. He is survived by his wife Karla, his sisters Gay Fogarty and Debbie Gale and his son, Jason Ullo. Cremation was performed by Love Funeral Homes in Limon, Colo.
