Lewis spent his young life in Baca County near the Kansas border on a farm. At the age of 6 the family moved to the state of Washington where he began school. Then they moved back to Baca County where Lewis attended Konantz school. The family moved several times before settling on a farm east of Elbert.
Lewis attended high school in Peyton where he boarded with a family during the week and graduated in 1949. He then attended Parks School of Business in Denver where he earned a business degree. When he was a senior in high school he noticed a freshman girl who was the sister of one of his classmates. He fell in love with Lorene Cole and the couple were married June 10, 1951. They lived east of Elbert just down the hill from his parents when their first daughter Linda was born in August of 1952. Soon after Lewis went to work in Simla for the government agency, Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service. Then a couple years later a son, Kenneth Edwin was born on October 3, 1954. Lewis continued to commute to Simla every day, then come home to milk cows and do other chores. On January 24, 1957 Cindy Louise was born. Then a few years later, Tammy Lavina joined the family on December 30, 1962.
In 1965 the family moved to Simla where Lewis continued to work for ASCS and the kids attended Simla School. Lewis spent many years with the ASCS. He supported his children in all their activities and was a dedicated Simla sports fan even through some of his grandchildren. At age 55 he retired from ASCS and he and Lorene moved back to Elbert where he continued ranching full time.
In 1996 Lorene became ill and was diagnosed with cancer. Lorene passed away in December 1996.
On June 11, 1997 Lewis married Liddie Ashcraft from Matheson. She too had lost her husband Glen to cancer two years prior.
