Michael Howard Wenlock
October 1, 1953 – November 8, 2023
Mick was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire England, to Donald F. Wenlock and Ann Howard Wenlock. He had an older sister, Patricia. The family moved around the UK and Germany as his dad was in the RAF. Woolverstone Hall was the boarding school where Mick learned the rigors of rugby, academics, and the arts. He attained a degree in Mechanical Engineering at East Herts College and attended Newcastle University. He installed railroad signaling, he worked on deep sea trawlers, he even did sheep herding in Scotland.
Mick met and married Nancy in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1978. He loved being stepdad to Chris, Nancy’s son. Sean was born a year later and because he was born deaf-blind, his well-being became a major family focus from then on.
Sports? Oh yes! Especially his teams Peterborough United and Newcastle United. In the US, Mick worked at AOL. When Major League Soccer started, Mick recruited a network of savvy fans, one at each team location, for in-depth news. Thus AOL had the best coverage of US soccer right up until the major networks took over.
He loved to provide enlightenment to his fellows on social media and his blog. He devoured books. Music? Mozart to Doc Watson to Johnny Cash to Gregorian Chant.
And he loves God. He and Nancy were baptized into the Catholic faith this year, bringing such joy and conviction! Mick always faced any challenges with courage but this completed his life and vision for the future. Unparalleled Blessings!
He is survived by his wife Nancy, stepson Chris, cousins Eileen Flisher and Pam Blair, sisters-in-law Virginia Allen and Jane Allen, niece Megan Showers, and nephew Geoff Showers.
Here are a few snippets from some who knew him:
“...I am so thankful for his wisdom and advice - he helped me through a very tough situation and did it with compassion, humor, and strength…”
“...Despite Mick's being British, he tried hard to fit in here. For instance, while he held onto his unaccountable love for soccer, I remember his scolding me for suggesting that he didn't like baseball, too…”
“...He once asked me to calculate the exact force that a medieval jouster would feel when hit with a lance from a charging horse. Tough, yet intellectual, inquisitive, uniquely Mick...”
“...And he just made one feel good with his ever “chirpy” demeanor!...’’
