View Video Tribute Richard Lee Parker, age 77, of Arriba, Colorado passed away October 10, 2009 at his home in Arriba. Richard was born July 29, 1932 in Amarillo, Texas to Elmer and Zella (Braddock) Parker. He was one of two children born to this union. Richard was raised in Amarillo, and following high school he entered the United States Army. He enlisted on November 7, 1952, and served his country during the Korean War. Richard attained the rank of Corporal and receiving the National Defense Service Medal before being honorably discharged on November 8, 1954. On December 23, 1956, Richard married Shirley Nelle Gowen in Tucumcari, New Mexico. To this union four children were born. The couple made their home in the Denver area where Richard owned and operated a drywall finishing company. Following Richard’s retirement, the couple relocated to Arriba, Colorado where Richard served as a town counsel member. Richard also loved bowling and flying as a private pilot. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially sharing Smarties candy with his grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his father Elmer and his mother Zella, who passed away in June 2009 at the age of 100. Richard is survived by his wife Shirley of Arriba, CO and his children Patrick Parker of Bailey, CO, Michael Parker of Dallas, TX, Cindy and husband David Happs of Westminister, CO and Kathleen Baker of Thornton, CO. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Scoby of Tyler, TX, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Richard Parker will be held 1:30 pm Friday, October 16, 2009 at the First Congregational Church of Arriba with Pastor Bob Strauch officiating. Burial of casketed remains with Military Honors will be held 9:15am Friday October 16, 2009 at the Ft. Logan National Cemetery Denver, Colorado prior to the memorial service in Arriba, Colorado. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Donor’s choices.
